September 5 is being observed as Teachers’ Day. On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, President Droupadi Murmu will present the National Awards to 48 school teachers today at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.
The teachers include educators from several institutions, including Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools, Adarsh Tribal Schools and PM SHRI Schools.
Among them are 26 male and 22 female teachers. Three teachers have been selected from Uttar Pradesh, while two each have been chosen from Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
Among these teachers, Vaibhav Vasantrao Kulkarni, a mathematics teacher at a Navodaya Vidyalaya in Latur, has been selected for the National Teachers’ Award 2026.
Kulkarni has more than three decades of experience. He has developed innovative teaching methods and low-cost learning aids to help students understand mathematical concepts.
Selection Conducted at the District, State, and National Levels
According to the ministry, 48 teachers were selected by the Department of School Education and Literacy in three stages. The process was completed at the district, state, and national levels.
The National Teachers’ Awards aim to highlight the outstanding contributions of some of the country’s finest teachers. They also honor teachers who have improved the quality of school education and enriched the lives of students through their dedication and hard work.
This Award Was Started in 1958
The National Teachers’ Award was introduced in 1958. Its purpose was to publicly honor outstanding and dedicated teachers and recognize their contributions to the field of education. The award is given to teachers who-
- Have made significant contributions to improving the quality of education.
- Have contributed to students’ learning and development through their efforts.
- Have used new and effective teaching methods.
- Have set an example and provided inspiration to other teachers through their work.

PM Modi met the 2024 National Teachers’ Award winners. At the time, 82 teachers were given this award. During the meeting, a teacher from Tamil Nadu said that many people in her area wanted to study in the local language. PM Modi responded, “There is a misconception among us that everyone in Tamil Nadu must know English. That is why the new education policy emphasizes the mother tongue.”

PM Modi met 45 teachers who received the National Awards in Delhi a day before Teachers’ Day last year. Modi addressed them for around 35 minutes. During the interaction, the PM discussed GST reforms, laws related to online gaming, and a self-reliant India.
