The Tamil Nadu government has implemented a ban on carrying and using smartphones inside 52 major temples in the state. Mobile phones without cameras will be allowed inside the temples.
Devotees arriving with smartphones will have to deposit their phones at counters set up at the temple entrances. A fee of ₹5 will be charged for each phone, and devotees will be given a receipt or plastic token.
Ramesh, Minister of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE), announced the decision. It has been taken under earlier directions issued by the Madras High Court.
