Two Bangladeshi prisoners allegedly escaped from a police vehicle while being taken to the Jangipur court in Murshidabad’s Raghunathganj on Friday, triggering a major search operation. Police later managed to recapture one of them, while the search for the second fugitive continues.
Two Bangladeshi prisoners escape police vehicle
According to police sources, the two men were detained in the Krishnashail More area of Raghunathganj police station on Thursday night after they were found moving around suspiciously. During questioning, police suspected their identities and learned that both were residents of Chapainawabganj in Bangladesh. They were subsequently arrested and identified as Anarul Sheikh and Mohammad Rubel Sheikh.

On Friday, the two were being taken to Jangipur court when they allegedly managed to get out of the police vehicle before reaching the court and fled. Police personnel immediately chased them, while local residents also joined the pursuit.
Cyclist helps police recapture one prisoner
One of the prisoners was eventually caught near a club behind Raghunathganj Boys’ School, reportedly after cyclist Sanjit Singh intervened. Singh said he tried to stop the fleeing men after noticing the commotion. Although his first attempt failed, he later caught one of them in a narrow lane. He reportedly suffered a hand injury after falling into a drain during the struggle.
Second fugitive escapes towards nearby waterbody
The second prisoner allegedly escaped towards an area near a waterbody. Police have launched a search operation, covering nearby lanes, the banks of the waterbody and possible escape routes.
Meanwhile, police are also investigating how the two prisoners managed to escape from the vehicle. Officials said the possibility of negligence during the transportation of the accused is also being examined.
