Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay said on Thursday that the Election Commission has recognised TVK as a registered political party.
The party has been recognised in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The EC has also confirmed the ‘Whistle’ election symbol for TVK, on which the party contested the elections.
Vijay said TVK secured 35% of the votes in the recent 2026 Assembly elections. He described it as an “unprecedented miracle” in Tamil Nadu politics.
He said that respecting the electoral mandate, his government would work towards providing honest and corruption-free governance.
Promise of public service and welfare schemes
Vijay promised to continuously honour voters’ trust through public service and welfare schemes across the state.
He emphasised the ideological direction of the secular social justice alliance. Vijay said that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam contested the recent Assembly election 27 months after the party was formally launched.
TVK was not a recognised party earlier
When a new party is formed, it does not need to be immediately “recognised” to contest elections. The Election Commission has a list of unoccupied election symbols, known as ‘free symbols’.
If a new party fields candidates in a specified number of seats (5% of the total seats in the state), the Election Commission assigns it one of these free symbols, such as a whistle, only for that election, so that all its candidates can contest on the same symbol.
