Ashish Banerjee Suicide | Former TMC MLA Body Found in Birbhum Office

Former Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, Ashish Banerjee, committed suicide. On Sunday morning, his body was found hanging from a noose in a TMC office in Birbhum district.

This party office is located near his house in Rampurhat. According to the police, a suicide note was also found in the office on the morning of August 16. Ashish Banerjee was also a former TMC MLA. Police have sent the body for post-mortem.

Ashish Banerjee was a minister and deputy speaker in Mamata’s government

Ashish Banerjee was a close aide of Mamata Banerjee and a senior Trinamool Congress leader. After the TMC came to power in West Bengal, he served as a minister in several departments, including School Education and Agriculture.

He was elected MLA from the Rampurhat seat five consecutive times in 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021. He also served as Deputy Speaker of the Assembly in the previous Mamata Banerjee government.

However, he lost the 2026 Assembly election to BJP candidate Dhruba Saha. Resigned as district president on June 2

Ashish Banerjee resigned as TMC’s Birbhum district president and chairman of the district core committee on June 2.

He said the core committee had become inactive and there was no longer any need for it to function. Banerjee added that he would now remain only a regular member of the party.
