A massive fire broke out at a plastic factory in the Industrial Estate area near Sevoke Road in Siliguri on Monday morning, triggering panic across the industrial zone. The fire reportedly started around 9 am and quickly spread through large quantities of plastic materials and bags of plastic granules stored inside the factory.
Three fire engines rushed to control blaze
Bhaktinagar Police Station personnel quickly reached the spot after receiving information about the fire. Three fire engines were also deployed to bring the blaze under control. The large quantity of highly flammable plastic materials inside the factory caused the fire to intensify rapidly, sending thick black smoke across the area that was visible from a considerable distance.
Nearby factories evacuated amid fears of spread
With several factories and warehouses located near the affected unit, there were concerns that the fire could spread further. Firefighters worked to protect the neighbouring factories and warehouses. Electricity supply to the surrounding area was disconnected as a safety precaution, while workers inside the factory and nearby warehouses were evacuated safely.
Fire safety arrangements under scanner after blaze
Firefighters subsequently entered the factory despite the risks and began efforts to contain the blaze. The large quantity of plastic and other combustible materials made the operation difficult. After prolonged efforts, the fire was eventually brought under control.
Several crores of damage feared in fire
However, a huge quantity of plastic materials stored inside the factory was destroyed before the fire could be completely contained. Preliminary estimates suggest that the damage could run into several crores of rupees.
No casualties reported despite massive industrial fire
Questions have also been raised over the fire-safety arrangements at the factory. Authorities are examining whether adequate firefighting equipment was available and whether it was properly used during the incident.
The exact cause of the fire remains unclear. A short circuit has not been ruled out, but police and the fire department have launched an investigation to determine the actual cause of the blaze. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
