People are troubled by dog terror in Uttarakhand. They are coming out of their homes with sticks for protection.

Eleven people have been injured in attacks by aggressive dogs in Narayanbagarh, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, prompting authorities to close 10 schools as a precautionary measure and shift more than 600 students to online classes.

The Forest Department’s Quick Response Team has launched an operation to capture the dogs, with three caught so far, while residents are carrying sticks due to fears of further attacks.

On the instructions of Chamoli District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar, Chief Education Officer (DEO) Akash Saraswat had issued an order declaring a holiday in the schools. Initially, a four-day holiday from August 20 to 23 was announced, but this was later reduced to two days.

The Forest Department’s Quick Response Team (QRT) is conducting an operation to capture the aggressive dogs. Three dogs have been caught so far.

Local residents claim that a rabid dog bit other dogs, following which several dogs in the area became aggressive. However, this claim has not yet been officially confirmed.

How dog attacks increased in Chamoli

According to local residents, three people were attacked by dogs on Sunday (16 Aug) and Monday (17 Aug). On Tuesday (18 Aug), dogs attacked four people, including schoolchildren. On Wednesday, four more people, including three schoolchildren, were attacked.

People injured yesterday, Deepanshu Bisht, Manvi, Vaishnavi, labourer Prakash and Lakshmi, a resident of Panti village, were taken to hospital and administered anti-rabies injections.

17-member joint team conducting operation

The Quick Response Team (QRT) comprises five Forest Department officials, four personnel from the Animal Husbandry Department and four Tehsil employees. Two to three police personnel have also been deployed with the team. The operation is being monitored by SDM Yadveer Singh.

The dogs are being caught using nets. The Animal Husbandry Department has started two camps at the Narayanbagarh veterinary hospital. Captured dogs are being vaccinated. Residents have also been advised to get their pet dogs vaccinated.

According to Chamoli Veterinary Officer Devendra Singh Bisht, 22 dogs have been vaccinated so far in the Narayanbagarh area. In addition, two cows and a calf have also been vaccinated. Camps are being held to monitor and vaccinate dogs.

Schools had earlier been closed in J&K’s Rajouri

This is possibly the second time in India that schools have had to be closed because of attacks by aggressive dogs. Earlier, schools in eight panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri were closed for a day due to attacks by aggressive dogs. The CRPF also had to be deployed there for the safety of residents.

Eight people attacked in two days, children scared

According to local residents, dogs attacked four people, including schoolchildren, on Tuesday. On Wednesday, four more people were bitten. The repeated attacks have left residents fearful, with the safety of children being their biggest concern.

Fearing dog attacks, people are avoiding going out alone. Several local residents are carrying sticks when leaving their homes so they can protect themselves in case of an attack.

10 schools closed for children’s safety

After receiving information about the situation, the administration, on the District Magistrate’s instructions, declared a holiday from August 20 to 23 at 10 government and private schools in Narayanbagarh market and nearby areas. No offline classes will be held during this period and students will attend classes online.

Local residents have urged the administration to investigate the reasons behind the dogs becoming suddenly aggressive and capture them at the earliest. They have sought a permanent solution to the problem so that the risk of attacks on children and other residents can be eliminated.
