Ganga Spate Bihar & Floods UP Districts

Due to an active monsoon trough over eastern Madhya Pradesh, heavy rain occurred in the Jabalpur, Chambal and Narmadapuram divisions on Sunday. The weather department has issued a heavy rain alert for 14 districts. Rainfall activity is expected to shift towards central and western Madhya Pradesh by August 24. This means the impact of rain may increase in other parts of the state in the coming days.

Continuous rain in Uttar Pradesh has caused rivers across the state to swell. Nineteen districts are affected by floods. Crops have been damaged in 92 villages, while 26 villages have been turned into islands. Roads connecting these villages to other areas have also been submerged.

In Bihar, the Ganga is in spate from Buxar to Bhagalpur. The river has crossed the danger mark at several key locations, including Gandhi Ghat and Hathidah in Patna. In Buxar, the Ganga has crossed the warning level and is nearing the danger mark. The water level is rising by one centimetre every two hours.

Several parts of Odisha received heavy rain on Sunday due to a low-pressure area that formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, heavy rain is likely in several districts of the state until August 26. The weather department has issued a red alert for five districts on Monday.

In Himachal Pradesh, a total of 125 roads are closed. The highest number of closures is in Mandi (62), followed by Kullu (31), Shimla (10), Chamba and Kangra (8 each), Una (4), and Bilaspur and Lahaul-Spiti (1 each). The weather department has forecast heavy rain in the state until August 29.
