The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, has cancelled its 34th convocation ceremony, which was scheduled for September 12. The decision comes after students protested against the invitation of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant as the chief guest.
Students can now collect their certificates either by courier or by visiting the university.
Traditionally, the CJI presents degrees to students at NLSIU’s annual convocation. However, this year, students opposed receiving their degrees from CJI Surya Kant, who was invited as the chief guest.
Protests also held at three other institutes
Earlier, students at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), NALSAR University of Law and O.P. Jindal Global University had also raised objections to CJI Surya Kant’s participation.
More than 700 students and alumni protest
At NLSIU, more than 700 students and alumni protested against the participation of CJI Surya Kant and Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra in the convocation ceremony. The students also wrote to the Bar Council, raising their concerns over their participation.
