India plans to buy the battle-tested Javelin anti-tank missile system from the US, American Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Friday. He said the move would strengthen the India-US defence relationship and could open the door to co-production opportunities.
The FGM-148 Javelin is a portable anti-tank missile. It is designed to destroy tanks, armored vehicles, and bunkers. The missile identifies the target’s heat (heat signature) and attacks it. It has a range of 2500 meters. It is capable of destroying targets even in smoke, dust, or bad weather.
The M982A1 is a GPS-guided smart projectile. It functions like a smart bomb but is fired from an artillery gun. While a normal artillery gun has a range of 15-20 km, the Excalibur can hit targets accurately up to 40-50 kilometers away.
The FGM-148 Javelin missile can be fired from the shoulder to attack targets.
