Former Panihati municipality chairman Somnath Dey was arrested by a special team of the West Bengal Police in Bengaluru early Thursday in connection with the RG Kar case.
Dey has been accused of playing a significant role in the alleged hurried cremation of the body of the RG Kar victim, in an alleged attempt to destroy evidence.
Family alleges misuse of administrative influence
According to police sources, Dey became active after the victim’s body was recovered from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. He allegedly played a key role in transporting the body from the hospital to the victim’s home in Panihati and subsequently arranging for the cremation.
Police trace accused after extended disappearance
The victim’s family has alleged that Dey misused his administrative influence and authority to facilitate the hurried cremation while allegedly bypassing necessary legal and social procedures. They further alleged that the move was aimed at destroying crucial evidence and hampering the investigation into the crime.
Investigators to question Dey over conspiracy
Dey reportedly went into hiding after the incident. Investigators later traced his location through confidential sources and travelled to Bengaluru, where he was arrested.
Police said Dey would be brought to Khardah police station on transit remand on Friday. Investigators are expected to question him about the alleged conspiracy and whether he acted on the instructions of others.
Arrest may bring fresh investigation twist
The arrest could mark a fresh turn in the investigation into the RG Kar case. Earlier, former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh was also arrested over similar allegations related to the hurried cremation of the victim’s body.
