Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee has alleged that some BJP workers entered the TMC office on Camac Street in Kolkata at around 4:30 am on Thursday and vandalised it. According to him, the attackers were armed and assaulted party workers, snatched their phones and damaged electronic equipment kept in the office.
Banerjee also questioned the Kolkata Police’s response to the incident. He said the employees and lawyers informed the police by phone and email, but no action was taken for nearly two hours. He demanded the arrest of those involved in the attack and a thorough investigation into the incident.
Alleges planned attack by BJP
Abhishek Banerjee shared a video of the alleged attack on social media. He alleged that the incident was part of a pre-planned attack. He demanded an investigation into who planned the violence, who organised it and whose instructions were followed.
Banerjee also appealed to the West Bengal Governor, Union Home Minister and Prime Minister’s Office to take action in the matter. He targeted BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, alleging that violence and pressure were being used to intimidate the Opposition.
Dispute over the same office a few days ago
The incident comes days after the West Bengal Police registered an FIR against Abhishek Banerjee, TMC MP Derek O’Brien and others. They were accused of obstructing police personnel and assaulting them when officers arrived on Camac Street to remove an alleged unauthorised hoarding.
Following this, Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials, accompanied by police personnel, reached the building where Abhishek Banerjee’s office is located. The officials removed a signboard bearing the words ‘All India Trinamool Congress’ from the building. The action further escalated the dispute between the TMC and the administration.
