The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the removal of temporary structures associated with Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s Sebashray initiative in Falta.
Petition alleges construction on playground land
The order was passed by a division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty following a petition seeking the demolition of two structures allegedly built by occupying a playground and garden near the Falta Block Development Office.
Court directs removal of temporary structures
Petitioner and Falta resident Aminuddin Khan alleged that the structures were illegally constructed on public land and were causing inconvenience to local residents. He claimed that the ground was regularly used for school sports, cricket and football tournaments, as well as government and social programmes.
Local residents cite disruption to sports
Hearing the petition, the court directed the removal of the Sebashray camp and temporary structures constructed in the name of a medical college. The Acting Chief Justice also questioned whether police assistance would be required to remove the structures.
Petitioner claims major Falta camp built
Sebashray was launched by Abhishek Banerjee last year to provide healthcare services to people in his Lok Sabha constituency. Several temporary structures were reportedly set up ahead of the Assembly elections.
Court questions continued illegal construction presence
According to the petitioner, the Falta facility was the largest Sebashray centre in Abhishek’s constituency and involved an expenditure of around ₹5 crore.
The court’s direction comes amid the ongoing debate over the use of public spaces for temporary structures linked to political or welfare initiatives.
