TMC seeks President Murmu, Governor meeting over Bengal law order

The Trinamool Congress is set to approach President Droupadi Murmu and West Bengal Governor R N Ravi over the law and order situation in the state, amid a series of alleged attacks on its leaders and workers.

Sources said the Kalighat camp has already written to both the President and the Governor seeking appointments to discuss the situation.

Party alleges attacks on workers

The TMC has repeatedly alleged that its workers are being harassed and that their homes have been vandalised since the BJP came to power in West Bengal. The BJP, however, has maintained that anyone found guilty of wrongdoing will face action irrespective of political affiliation.

BJP maintains guilty will face action

In recent incidents, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly targeted with eggs while travelling to the home of a slain party worker in Sonarpur. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was allegedly targeted with mud and water in Halisahar. Several other TMC leaders have also faced egg attacks on different occasions.

Camac Street office allegedly vandalised

The latest incident took place early Thursday morning when miscreants allegedly attacked and vandalised Abhishek Banerjee’s office on Camac Street. TMC sources also alleged that security personnel at the office were assaulted.

TMC seeks constitutional intervention over situation

The developments have raised concern within the Kalighat camp, prompting the party to seek the intervention of the country’s constitutional head and the constitutional head of the state. The move marks a political shift from the period when the TMC was in power and the BJP, then in Opposition, frequently raised allegations over Bengal’s law and order situation.

Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien has confirmed that letters have already been sent to the President and the Governor seeking meetings.
