The Indian Army received 595 new officers on Saturday from the Officers Training Academies (OTAs) in Chennai and Gaya, Bihar. Among them were 64 women officers.
In Chennai, 342 Indian cadets were commissioned as Army officers, including 29 women. In addition, 17 cadets from friendly countries completed their training, including 10 women.
At the 29th passing-out parade at the Gaya academy, 253 cadets were commissioned as officers. They included 218 men and 35 women.

Twenty-seven-year-old Sharadendu Tiwari, a resident of Neelmatha in Lucknow, has become an officer in the Indian Army after giving up a package worth ₹4.6 million at Amazon. He will be commissioned as an officer from the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Gaya. Sharadendu failed seven times, but achieved success on his eighth attempt.
Sharadendu’s father, Honorary Captain Rajkumar Tiwari, served in the Army Service Corps for 36 years. Sharadendu completed his schooling at Chandimandir Central School in Haryana. He then earned a BE in Information Technology and an MTech in Computer Science from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh.

Athira Suresh, a resident of Kozhikode, Kerala, secured an excellent job at ExxonMobil after clearing the IIT-JEE and earning an engineering degree from NIT Calicut. Inspired by her father, Naik Suresh, who served in the Signals Corps, Athira decided to join the Army.
She passed the SSB examination on her very first attempt and completed her training at OTA Gaya. Today, she has been commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army. Athira says that joining the Army was not a ‘backup plan’ for her. It was a well-considered decision. She had already made up her mind to join the Army.
