On the first death anniversary of famous Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, his wife Garima has sought justice. Zubeen Garg died in Singapore on 19 September 2025. He had gone there for a concert. Seven people have been brought under the scope of the investigation following his death. Several admirers have been visiting his home on his first death anniversary. His wife has said that the family and the people of Assam are still waiting for answers about how he died.
Speaking to NDTV, Garima said, “We want to know what actually happened in Singapore on 19 September 2025. I see him everywhere. The way people have come here, they are not looking at anyone’s caste, religion or ideology. They have come as human beings.”

The Assam government had initiated the process of investigating the reasons and circumstances surrounding his death in Singapore. The case is progressing in court. The Assam government has said the purpose of the investigation is to uncover the circumstances and facts related to Zubeen’s death in Singapore. On the demand for justice, Garima said, “We all want justice for Zubeen Garg. We want to know what actually happened in Singapore on 19 September 2025. We are still waiting for that answer. We must get justice. If there is no justice for Zubeen, then who is it for?”
Fans are celebrating Zubeen Day
Fans are observing the first death anniversary of Zubeen Garg as Zubeen Day. The three-day Zubeen Day celebrations, which began on 17 September, are being held with music, prayers and cultural programmes. A crowd of fans gathered at the memorial in Kamarakuchi. The memorial was decorated with flowers and gamosas. Arrangements had been made for people attending the three-day programme. The event will conclude on Saturday, that is, today.

Death occurred last September, Singapore police said – cause of death was drowning
Singer Zubeen Garg died on 19 September 2025. Zubeen Garg had travelled to Singapore to take part in celebrations marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and Singapore. He was scheduled to perform at the ‘North East India Festival’ there. Before the performance, Zubeen was partying with his friends on a yacht near Lazarus Island when he died by drowning.

The major event was cancelled as soon as news of the singer’s death emerged. Following Zubeen Garg’s death, a complaint was filed in Assam against everyone who was with him at the time of the incident, including his manager Siddharth Sharma, as well as the event manager. After the complaint was filed, the singer’s wife, Garima, released a tearful video on the singer’s official social media account, appealing for the complaint against the manager to be withdrawn.
Some time later, Jubin’s wife raised suspicions of murder and demanded an investigation. Following the complaint, the friends who had been with Jubin on the yacht and the event organiser were arrested.
Two days after the singer Zubeen Garg’s death, his mortal remains were first taken to Delhi and then flown to Guwahati on a special aircraft.
Before the funeral, large numbers of people gathered in Guwahati to pay tribute to Zubeen.
Meanwhile, the Gauhati High Court has set up a special fast-track sessions court to hear the case concerning the death of Assam singer Zubeen Garg on a daily basis. Sharmila Bhuiyan, the district judge of Baksa district, will preside over the fast-track court.
The Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court made this appointment. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigated the case and filed a chargesheet in the local court, naming seven people as accused.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said in the Assembly on 25 November that singer Zubeen Garg’s death was not an accident but murder. He said he would ensure that the guilty were punished.
Alongside the Assam Police, the Singapore Police also investigated the case. In January, the Singapore Police ruled out any conspiracy in singer Zubeen Garg’s death. According to the report submitted to the court, Zubeen died by drowning. He had refused to wear a life jacket while intoxicated.
The Singapore Police prepared the report based on the testimony of 35 people. The witnesses provided a minute-by-minute account of the day and said how much alcohol Zubeen Garg had consumed before going diving while intoxicated.
According to the report presented in court, 52-year-old Zubeen Garg was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. His toxicology report found a blood alcohol level of 333 milligrams, more than four times Singapore’s legal limit of 80 milligrams.
The coroner said he was unable to make sound decisions because he was so intoxicated. He initially wore a life jacket but removed it after swimming for the first time. When he entered the water for the second time, he clearly refused to wear a life jacket despite being warned by the captain and the other companions.
Court rejects wife’s allegations
Zubeen’s wife had suspected that the singer might have been pushed into the water. Coroner Nakhoda clarified that the police had conducted a very thorough investigation. No evidence was found to suggest that anyone had forced or pushed him.
Even those who tried to save him had made every possible effort. The court said that Zubeen had entered the water voluntarily to swim and that no one had deliberately held his face under the water while he was drowning.
