The impact of the Bhavnagar spurious liquor tragedy has now reached Surat, where Sanjaysinh Dodiya, a young man originally from Bhavnagar, has been declared brain dead at INS Hospital in Khatodara.
He had consumed the suspected poisonous liquor in Bhavnagar before travelling to Surat. After remaining in critical condition in the ICU for three days, he has been placed on ventilator support and his family has been informed.
Heart stopped after reaching Surat, revived through CPR
Sanjaysinh allegedly consumed liquor in Bhavnagar on the night of August 16 and reached Surat the following morning. Soon after arriving, he became unconscious and his condition deteriorated rapidly.
He was initially taken to a private hospital in Varachha, where he suffered a cardiac arrest. Doctors performed CPR and managed to revive him, but he remained unconscious thereafter.
Tests indicate ethanol and methanol poisoning
Medical examinations showed that adequate oxygen was not reaching Sanjaysinh’s brain. A toxicology report also indicated the presence of serious effects associated with ethanol and methanol poisoning.
As his neurological condition deteriorated within 8 to 10 hours of consuming the suspected poisonous liquor, he was shifted to INS Hospital for specialised neurological treatment.
Medicines being given to maintain vital organs
Despite intensive treatment by neuro specialists, doctors declared Sanjaysinh brain dead after his brain functions ceased.
Medicines are currently being administered to maintain the functioning of his other vital organs. The development has left his family devastated as they continue to await further medical assessment.
