The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) will hold a meeting of its National Executive Committee on Monday. The meeting will review the status of assurances given by the Central Government after the nationwide agitation was withdrawn on 25 July.

CJP said the government has not yet formally informed it about the steps being taken to fulfil these assurances. The party said it would consider all options to ensure the commitments are met, including restarting a peaceful nationwide agitation.

Questions Raised on Centre’s Assurances

CJP said it had withdrawn the agitation after trusting the government’s assurances to the country’s youth. The party said it would not allow this trust to be seen as a sign of weakness.

The party has asked students, young citizens, supporters and volunteers to be prepared for the outcome of Monday’s meeting. CJP will decide its future strategy after reviewing the situation.

CJP said the delegation that held talks with the government has not formally contacted the party to provide information about the steps being taken to fulfil the written assurances. These include assurances related to FIRs and compensation.

Supreme Court had sought a list of FIRs

These developments came a few days after the Supreme Court hearing on 18 August. The court had sought a consolidated list of FIRs filed against students and protesters across the country.

According to CJP, the Supreme Court had asked the Centre to provide this list three times. The court may consider using its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to quash these cases.

CJP said that despite the court repeatedly asking for the list, the Central Government had not committed to providing it. The party’s co-convenor Saurav Das and legal affairs in-charge Ratna Singh raised concerns over this immediately after the hearing.

Both said it appeared that the government was betraying the younger generation after the movement was withdrawn based on assurances given during talks between CJP and the Centre.

Assurances included FIRs and compensation

CJP said the assurances included withdrawing or cancelling all FIRs related to the movement. A further assurance was given that no punitive action would be taken against any student or peaceful protester in the future.

The assurances also included compensation for the families of NEET-UG aspirants who died by suicide after the exam was cancelled following a paper leak in May.

CJP said its decision to withdraw the movement was based on the government’s assurances. The party warned that any attempt to weaken, delay, reinterpret or disregard these assurances would be seen as a betrayal of the country’s youth.

Movement withdrawn on 25 July

CJP withdrew its nationwide movement on 25 July. The decision came soon after the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the government’s assurance that it would take no punitive action against students and peaceful protesters.

The campaign also included demands for action over the NEET paper leak controversy and compensation for the families of candidates who died.
