The Centre has announced gallantry medals for 301 police and fire service personnel ahead of Independence Day. The awards include 272 police personnel and 29 fire service personnel, recognising exceptional bravery in saving lives, protecting property, preventing crime and apprehending criminals.
197 personnel from LWE-affected areas honoured
Of the 301 gallantry medals, 197 have been awarded to personnel serving in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected areas. Another 51 personnel from Jammu and Kashmir, 12 from the Northeast and 41 from other regions have also been recognised for acts of bravery.
Overall, 1,057 personnel from the police, fire service, home guards, civil defence and prison departments will receive gallantry and service medals this Independence Day.
President’s Medal awarded to 92 personnel
The government has also announced the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) for 92 personnel. These include 83 from the police, four from the fire service, three from civil defence and home guards, and two from the prison service.
The medal is awarded for distinguished service over a sustained period.
664 receive Medal for Meritorious Service
A total of 664 personnel have been awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM). The recipients include 606 police personnel, 28 fire service personnel, 18 civil defence and home guard personnel, and 12 prison personnel.
The award recognises dedication to duty and meritorious service.
