
All three hydraulic systems on Air India flight AI2379, travelling from Phuket, Thailand, to Delhi, failed temporarily. As a result, the aircraft’s elevators and ailerons became unresponsive for four seconds.
According to Airbus’s preliminary report, the incident occurred on August 4 while the aircraft was cruising. The sudden loss of altitude caused the aircraft to plunge 300ft, injuring 20 passengers and four crew members.
Co-pilot gave nose-down input, controls failed to respond
According to the report, the co-pilot applied full nose-down input to bring the aircraft down. However, the controls initially failed to respond.
The aircraft’s hydraulic systems resumed functioning after a short period. The report said the root cause of the failure had not yet been determined.
Air India initially blamed turbulence
The incident on flight AI2379 occurred amid sudden turbulence. In its initial statement, Air India attributed the aircraft’s 300ft drop to turbulence.
