The Government of India on Friday registered 27 places and geographical features in Arunachal Pradesh on the official map of the Survey of India, amid repeated attempts by China to rename locations in the border state.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the move was carried out in consultation with the Arunachal Pradesh government. The ministry said the decision was aimed at ensuring the accurate identification of these places and improving public awareness.
In a statement, the ministry said, “The Government of India, in consultation with the State Government of Arunachal Pradesh, has registered a total of 27 places and geographical features located in the state on the official map of the Survey of India with their standard names.”
The ministry added that including the locations on the official map would help ensure their correct identification and make the public more aware of their names and locations.
China has repeatedly announced new names for places in Arunachal Pradesh
China has periodically issued lists of names for places in Arunachal Pradesh, which it refers to as “Zangnan”. Beijing has also repeatedly claimed the state as part of southern Tibet.
India has consistently rejected China’s claims and attempts to rename places in Arunachal Pradesh, maintaining that such actions have no bearing on India’s sovereignty over the state.
Chinese troops reached Longju in 1959
Longju, located near the Line of Actual Control (LAC), is among the places now formally recorded on Survey of India maps. The area became one of the early flashpoints in India-China border tensions after Chinese troops entered Longju in 1959.
Nearby Maja village, in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district, is also among the 27 places and geographical features included on the official map.
Jairampur: Logistics hub for security forces
Jairampur in Changlang district is among the places formally identified on the official map. It serves as an important logistics hub, facilitating the movement of security forces towards eastern Arunachal Pradesh and the Myanmar border.
