Indias First Sports AI Center Launches at LNIPE Gwalior

The Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Gwalior is set to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as part of its Sports Education Technology Upgradation initiative.

The technology will not only help train athletes but also analyse their physical structure, movement and abilities in detail to identify areas for improvement.

For example, if a high-jump athlete repeatedly falls short despite extensive training, AI-based physical analysis could identify the technical shortcomings. It could help determine the appropriate stride pattern, the point from which the athlete should take off and other aspects of the jump.

The aim is to improve athletic performance and prepare players more effectively for national and international competitions. The centre is expected to be fully ready by November 2026.

Early talent identification to become easier

Gwalior is emerging as a hub for AI-based sports, education and agriculture, alongside its historical and cultural identity.

LNIPE has launched the Sports Education Technology Upgradation initiative to modernise sports training at the institute.

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has inaugurated a new Sports Science Block on the LNIPE campus, where the advanced AI Sports Centre is being developed.

The centre will focus on early talent identification, athlete development and performance tracking using AI.

Technology could prove a major boost for athletes

Swimming athlete Homi Gupta said the AI project being introduced at LNIPE for swimming and other sports could take athletes’ fitness and performance to a new level.

AI will make it easier to analyse postural deficiencies and movement patterns, helping coaches identify technical problems at an early stage.

The technology could also help reduce the risk of injuries and enable athletes to improve their performance more quickly.

AI-based analytics could identify complex performance issues and help athletes achieve better results in less time.

Athletes will save time and energy

Young athlete Ramji Sharma said the new AI and Sports Science Centre would be a major benefit for athletes like him.

Earlier, athletes often had to travel to sports centres in major cities such as Delhi for fitness tests and advanced diagnostic assessments, costing them time and energy.

With these facilities available at LNIPE, athletes will be able to assess their fitness accurately and regularly at the institute itself.

Data generated through AI analysis could help athletes understand their weaknesses and scientifically improve their stamina and strength, helping them perform better at national and international competitions.

AI could reshape the future of Indian sport

The centre will work on talent identification, athlete development and long-term nurturing.

Data such as body scans, height, weight, BMI and bone density could be analysed to assess which sport may be best suited to an athlete.

AI-based periodisation and scientifically designed training plans could further improve the way athletes are trained and developed.

The initiative aims to use sports science and technology to help Indian athletes reach higher levels of performance and compete more effectively at national and international events
