As floodwaters continue to devastate large parts of Assam, stories of loss have dominated the headlines. But amid the destruction, one family from North Bengal has quietly reminded everyone that compassion knows no borders.
Humanity transcends borders through selfless service
Driven by the belief that humanity rises above every geographical boundary, an Assam Rifles personnel and his wife, a school teacher, joined hands with a Siliguri-based NGO to stand beside flood-hit families in Assam.
Cooking fuel emerged as urgent necessity
The couple had already distributed food, clothes, drinking water, medicines, and other essential supplies during the first phase of their relief mission. However, they soon realised that while families had food grains, they had nothing to cook them with. Kitchens had been washed away, and the scarcity of cooking fuel had become one of the biggest challenges.
90 LPG cylinders restore hope, dignity
Understanding this silent crisis, they returned in the second phase with 90 LPG cylinders and cooking burners, reaching flood-affected families in Nimajan, Nazira, and Ligiripukhuri, nearly 30 kilometres from Sivasagar. They also distributed utensils, slippers, and new clothes to people who had lost everything to the floods.
Duty and compassion inspired remarkable mission
For the Assam Rifles personnel, helping the people of Assam was more than an act of charity; it was a duty towards the land where they serve. His wife, a teacher, believed that lessons of humanity are best taught through action rather than words.
North Bengal unites behind Assam’s recovery
The couple’s efforts inspired people from different walks of life across North Bengal to contribute generously through relief materials and financial assistance. Together, they transformed individual compassion into a collective humanitarian movement.
As Assam continues its long road to recovery, its message is simple yet powerful: When disaster strikes, humanity should never stop at state borders. Sometimes, the greatest relief isn’t just food or shelter, it is the reassurance that someone, somewhere, still cares.
