The two men accused of attacking Bihar MP Pappu Yadav with slippers were given a grand welcome in Bulandshahr on Friday (7 Aug) after being released on bail.
Supporters garlanded the duo before they travelled in an open jeep in a 7-km roadshow from Bulandshahr to Nathla Hasanpur village.
Supporters showered flowers during roadshow
As the open jeep moved through the route, supporters showered the two men with flowers and raised slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’. They later reached their village, where drums and trumpets were played during their welcome.
Despite the rain, a large number of supporters were seen dancing and raising slogans. BJP district president Vikas Chauhan and several party workers also welcomed the duo, while their family members embraced them.
Slipper attack followed protests over Pappu Yadav’s Parliament remarks
The incident came days after Pappu Yadav allegedly staged a ‘chanda chori’ demonstration in Parliament while dressed as a sadhu on July 31. Protests were subsequently held against him in several cities, including Lucknow.
A Hindu nationalist leader had also announced a reward of ₹51 lakh for anyone who beheaded the MP.
Both accused handed over to police after attack
On August 2, Sumit Giri, a Bulandshahr resident, allegedly attacked Pappu Yadav along with his associate Happy Sharma. During the incident, Yadav reportedly caught Sumit, while his supporters allegedly assaulted Happy.
Both men were subsequently handed over to the police.
Sumit Giri is the BJP city minister, while Happy Sharma is the party’s Mandal general secretary.

BJP District President Vikas Chauhan, along with a large number of party workers, welcomed both by garlanding them.
A roadshow of about 7 kilometers was taken out from the district headquarters to Naithla village. Both rode in an open jeep, chanting slogans.
Both were welcomed with drums, trumpets, and showering of flowers.
‘Pappu Yadav was enraged when questioned over remarks on Sanatan Dharma’
Sumit Giri and his associate Happy Sharma alleged that Pappu Yadav became angry when they questioned him over remarks they considered insulting to Lord Shri Ram, worshipped by millions of Hindus. They further alleged that Yadav and his associates assaulted them.
Sumit later lodged a complaint at Tilak Nagar Police Station in Delhi, accusing Yadav and his associates of assault and alleging that his gold chain and watch were taken during the incident.
Mother broke down after BJP leader’s arrest
Following Sumit Giri’s arrest, his mother broke down while speaking about her son. She said she only wanted him to return home safely and had no interest in politics.
According to her, Sumit had left home saying he was going to his office. In an emotional appeal, she urged that her son be released and allowed to return home safely.

- According to the police, Sumit, who attacked Pappu Yadav, is a resident of Sahpani village in Bulandshahr. His father’s name is Phool Giri. 34-year-old Sumit lives in Ghaziabad. He works there making iron goods.
- Happy Sharma is a resident of Nethla Hasanpur village in Bulandshahr. His father’s name is Munesh Kumar Sharma. His elder brother Sumant is a ration dealer. Happy has been associated with BJP for a long time. On June 5, Happy Sharma shared a post on his Instagram. Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak had congratulated him on this.

On the evening of August 2, MP Pappu Yadav was holding a press conference at his home. It was then that he was attacked with a slipper.
Pappu Yadav got up from the press conference and caught the attacker. During this, his supporters started beating him.
Pappu tried to stop his supporters, but they did not listen and continued to beat the accused.
Pappu Yadav pinned the attacker (in a pink shirt) next to him.
The police freed the accused with great difficulty and took him with them.
Pappu Yadav showed a knife to media personnel, which the accused had brought with him. However, the accused had denied it.
July 31: Pappu Yadav stages symbolic Ram Temple donation protest in Parliament
On July 31, the 10th day of the Monsoon Session, Pappu Yadav arrived at Parliament dressed as a sadhu in saffron robes and carrying a donation box. He staged a short symbolic play on the Parliament premises to protest what he described as the alleged misuse or theft of Ram Temple donations.
Pappu Yadav played the role of a priest and sat on the ground with the donation box. Rahul Gandhi and several other MPs then symbolically gave him donations.
‘Caught stealing’, opposition MPs stage symbolic action
During the performance, Pappu Yadav was shown keeping the donated money with himself instead of putting it into the box. Opposition MPs, including Ayodhya MP Awadhesh Prasad, then staged a symbolic assault after allegedly catching him ‘stealing’ the donations.
As part of the protest, Pappu Yadav was also seen touching Awadhesh Prasad’s feet.

August 1: FIR registered against Rahul Gandhi, Awadhesh Prasad and Pappu Yadav
An FIR was registered in Varanasi against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad and Independent Bihar MP Pappu Yadav over their symbolic act in Parliament involving alleged theft of offerings.
The complaint was filed by Jagadguru Balak Das, head priest of Patalpuri Math, at Kotwali Police Station.
Meanwhile, in Lucknow, Anurodh Rai, national president of the Sanatan Raksha Sangathan, issued a warning against Pappu Yadav and alleged that Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav were also opposed to Sanatan Dharma.
He demanded an apology and made a controversial threat against the leaders. He also announced a ₹51 lakh reward for anyone who beheads Pappu Yadav.
August 2: Hindu groups protest outside Pappu Yadav’s wife’s residence
Bajrang Dal workers and sadhus staged a protest outside the Delhi residence of Ranjeet Ranjan, Pappu Yadav’s wife and a Rajya Sabha MP.
Reacting to the protest, Pappu Yadav warned that targeting his children or family members would escalate the matter. He said political or personal disputes should not involve children and family members.
August 5: BJP leaders lodge complaint against Pappu Yadav
Sumit Giri filed a complaint against Pappu Yadav at Tilak Marg Police Station, accusing him of assault, robbery and issuing death threats.
In his complaint, Sumit alleged that if he or his associate Happy Sharma suffered any harm or an untoward incident in the future because of the alleged threats, Pappu Yadav, Munazir Alam and their associates should be held responsible.
