Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the transfer of the technology for all conventional missile systems developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to Indian private companies. These technologies will be used to produce missiles in the country.
The aim of this initiative is to increase domestic defence production. Under it, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will provide missile technology to eligible defence companies.
Private companies will be able to manufacture them domestically
The Ministry of Defence has not yet released a list of the missiles that private companies will be allowed to manufacture.
However, it is believed that the private sector may be permitted to manufacture the Akash air-defence missile, the Astra air-to-air missile and the Nag anti-tank guided missile.
Difference between conventional and unconventional missiles
Conventional missiles rely on explosives or speed to destroy their targets. Unconventional missiles, on the other hand, carry nuclear, biological or chemical weapons.
The Ministry of Defence said that this provision will help facilitate the successful transition of missile systems from development to industrial production.
Goal of reducing dependence on imports
The Ministry of Defence said, “The aim is to increase domestic production capacity, strengthen the defence industrial base, and provide Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and other technology partners with opportunities to become part of the supply chain.”
The ministry said that this initiative will help enhance military capabilities, reduce dependence on imports, and increase the value of production carried out in the country. It will also promote the growth of India’s defence production sector.
Defence production reaches Rs 1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26
According to the latest government figures, India’s domestic defence production stood at Rs 1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26. In 2014, the figure was Rs 46,000 crore.
India’s defence exports reached Rs 38,424 crore in FY 2025-26.
