A 36-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her 65-year-old retired policeman father-in-law during a family dispute in Gayatri Nagar, Sagar, on Tuesday morning.

The deceased, Savita Dixit, was the wife of Devesh Dixit, a BSF jawan currently posted in West Bengal. Police said her husband has been informed about the incident.

As soon as the police received information, a team reached the spot and sent Savita’s body for post-mortem. The accused, identified as Ramnaresh Dixit, was detained and is being questioned.

Makronia police station in-charge Nitin Pal said neighbours alerted the police after hearing Savita screaming.

When the police arrived, the accused was found at the house. During the preliminary investigation, police found 7–8 injury marks on the woman’s body. Forensic evidence was also collected from the crime scene.

Savita had been living with her in-laws at their house in Gayatri Nagar for a long time. The accused’s other son is also posted in the police department.

During questioning, Ramnaresh claimed that Savita came downstairs on Tuesday morning and threw a temple kept inside the house. He also alleged that she damaged some chairs before leaving to drop her elder daughter at school.

According to the accused, Savita returned while he was bathing and performing prayers and allegedly picked up her younger daughter and slammed her on the floor.

He claimed that when he intervened to protect the child, Savita attacked him with a knife, injuring his hand. He said he managed to snatch the knife from her and then assaulted her, causing serious injuries that resulted in her death.

The accused also alleged that there had been frequent disputes in the family since Savita came to live with them and that people in the neighbourhood were aware of the family tensions.

Post-mortem report to establish exact cause of death

Police said the exact cause of death will be established after the post-mortem report is received.

Investigators are currently examining the accused’s statements along with forensic evidence collected from the scene. Police said all aspects of the case are being investigated, and further action will be taken based on the findings.
