
59 DMK MLAs have refused to accept the new cars. Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin said, “Vijay himself has said that the government is in debt, so we will not accept this offer.”
On Friday, a debate was held in the Assembly over Vijay’s car scheme. During the debate, Udhayanidhi Stalin said cars should be provided to MLAs only after considering their financial situation.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay had announced that every MLA in the state would be provided with a government car.
Vijay made the announcement on Wednesday
On August 19, the Tamil Nadu government announced that it would provide all MLAs with new government cars. It also asked them to pay ₹75,000 per month towards car maintenance and driver expenses.
Debate erupts in Assembly
The plan to provide cars to MLAs sparked a heated debate in the Assembly. Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin said the Chief Minister had previously stated that he was against giving away freebies.
