A landslide occurred inside the under-construction tunnel in Pipalkoti, Chamoli on Thursday evening.
Rain has been intermittent across most parts of Uttarakhand since late Thursday night. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in several parts of the state on Friday.
An Orange alert is in place for Dehradun, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and Nainital. Other districts are under a Yellow alert, with heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms and intense showers possible at isolated places.
Heavy rain is also likely in parts of Haridwar, Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar.
Schools closed in three districts
Authorities have closed schools up to Class 12 in Pithoragarh, Dehradun and Nainital due to the adverse weather.
Meanwhile, 61 roads across 10 districts remain blocked.
22 workers trapped in tunnel; 9 reported dead
A landslide caused water to seep into a 3-km under-construction tunnel at Peepalkoti in Chamoli on Thursday evening. Debris and water trapped 22 workers inside.
Rescue teams have evacuated all the workers from the tunnel. Nine workers are reported to have died, with seven deaths officially confirmed so far. Confirmation of the remaining two deaths is awaited.
Dehradun and Udham Singh Nagar have been receiving rain since late night.
Rain likely throughout the day in Dehradun
Dehradun has been receiving intermittent rain since late Thursday night. The city is likely to remain partly cloudy on Friday, with one or two spells of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms.
Some areas could receive intense spells and heavy rain. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 32°C, with the minimum at around 25°C.

- August 15: A Yellow alert has been issued for isolated heavy rain in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Champawat and Bageshwar. Thunderstorms, lightning and intense showers are likely in the hills.
- August 16: Champawat, Bageshwar and Nainital are under an Orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain. Dehradun, Tehri, Haridwar, Chamoli, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora and Pithoragarh are under a Yellow alert for heavy rain.
- August 17: An Orange alert has been issued for Dehradun, Pauri and Tehri for heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning. Other districts could also receive isolated heavy showers.
