Chandigarh Protest | Sikh Prisoners Release Demand Turns Violent

Protesters demanding the release of Sikh prisoners who have completed their sentences in Punjab’s jails clashed with the police on Saturday. Along with the release of Sikh prisoners, they are demanding parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara, who was involved in the assassination of former Chief Minister Beant Singh.

Led by the Kaumi Insaaf Morcha, protesters heading towards the Governor House in Chandigarh from Mohali gathered near YPS Chowk. To stop them, Chandigarh Police sealed the border as a precautionary measure from early morning.

When the enraged crowd attempted to break through the barricades using a tractor, the police used water cannons. When the protesters still refused to back down, tear gas shells were fired at them using guns and drones to disperse them.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) President and former MP Simranjit Singh Mann, who reached near the Governor House in Chandigarh, was taken into custody.
