Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has appealed to all state governments to approve bike taxis. He said that allowing passengers to be carried on private bikes and scooters would create major employment opportunities, especially in rural areas. This could provide employment to around 80 million people.
Gadkari said the Centre has allowed bike taxis, but since transport is a state subject, some states have not yet approved them. He appealed to the states to approve the service so that people can get a new source of income.
Gadkari said the government would take strict action against drivers who repeatedly violate traffic rules. For this, there is a proposal to amend the Motor Vehicles Act and introduce a negative-point system for drivers.
Under the system, negative points would be added to a driver’s record for every traffic violation. Once the prescribed limit is crossed, the driving licence could be suspended or cancelled. The aim is to make drivers responsible for following traffic rules and driving safely.
