A man accused of posing as a doctor was arrested in Sonarpur after police allegedly caught him while posing as patients at his chamber. The accused was identified as Bishwarup Acharya.
Prescription pad carried foreign degrees
Acharya allegedly introduced himself as an oncologist and had opened around eight chambers in the Ghasiara area over the past few years. He reportedly charged ₹800 per patient. His prescription pad allegedly mentioned foreign qualifications, including FRCS.
Complaint triggered police investigation into doctor
The case came to light after Acharya recently rented a house and opened another chamber. After speaking with him, the house owner reportedly became suspicious and lodged a complaint at Sonarpur police station, following which police started an investigation.
Undercover visit exposed alleged fake qualifications
On Monday night, police reportedly visited Acharya’s chamber posing as patients. During their interaction, officers allegedly realised that he was not a qualified doctor. Acharya was subsequently arrested.
Officials seek answers about wider network
Police are now investigating where Acharya allegedly obtained the fake degrees and whether others were involved. He will be produced before the Baruipur court on Tuesday, with police expected to seek custody for questioning.
