Delhi University’s student polls brought a familiar winner and an unexpected turn. ABVP won three key DUSU posts, with Yash Dabas becoming president, Riya Chhawri secretary and Lakshyaraj Singh joint secretary.
But the vice-president’s chair went to independent candidate Deepanshu Shaukeen, who crossed 30,000 votes. His win marks the first independent victory on the DUSU central panel in 17 years.

Sugar may get cheaper before festivals
A little more sweetness may be on the way before the festive season. The government has doubled the sugar stock limit for bulk consumers from 15 to 30 days to prevent shortages and control prices.
However, the extra 15 days’ stock must be imported sugar, while locally bought sugar can be stored for only 15 days. Large sugar-using companies must also report their stock every Friday to the Food Ministry portal.
Sugar prices at factories have fallen 25%, but retail prices have dropped only 10%. The government has asked retailers to pass on the full benefit of lower prices. READ MORE
Pakistan’s forex reserves rise 7-fold in 3 years
Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves have surged nearly sevenfold in three years, reaching $26.79 billion. In January 2023, reserves had fallen to just $3.08 billion. Today, the State Bank holds a record $21.39 billion, while other banks hold $5.40 billion.
But there is a catch: the rise is being driven more by foreign loans and funds than earnings. A $3.06-billion weekly jump was largely linked to Eurobond proceeds.
Remittances remain a key support, but imports still exceed exports. Now, Pakistan faces a new challenge: keeping the dollars flowing while repaying old debts and managing oil costs. READ MORE
Trump can now impose 100% tariff on India over Russian oil
A new US law gives President Donald Trump the power to impose tariffs of up to 100% on India and other countries buying Russian oil. The Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 targets India, China, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan, among others.
India gets over 40% of its crude from Russia, making it particularly exposed. If India keeps buying Russian oil, its exports to the US could become costlier, hurting textiles, gems, engineering goods, leather and chemicals. If it shifts to other suppliers, however, costlier crude could push petrol and diesel prices higher at home. READ MORE

- President Droupadi Murmu will attend the valedictory session of the two-day international conference on ‘The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics’ in New Delhi on today. Organised by the National Green Tribunal, the conference will conclude after discussions on key environmental and climate challenges.
