An Afghan national was arrested at the Panitanki immigration office while allegedly attempting to travel to Nepal. His Indian associate was also arrested, police said. The accused Afghan national has been identified as Abdulla Khan. According to police sources, an Indian Aadhaar card, voter ID, bank account and driving licence were allegedly recovered from his possession.
Abdulla had been staying in India for a long time
Police said Abdulla had been staying in India for a long time and had allegedly obtained fake Indian documents by paying money. A lookout circular had also reportedly been issued against him by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
Several Indian identity documents recovered
According to the investigation, Abdulla had been residing in the Shibpur area of Howrah. He was staying with his Indian associate, Shankar Banik, a resident of Dattabad in Bidhannagar. Police said Abdulla was intercepted after he reached the Panitanki immigration office while allegedly planning to travel to Nepal. During questioning and a subsequent search, officials reportedly recovered several Indian identity documents from him.
Probe on
Shankar Banik was also arrested in connection with the case. Police have registered a case against both accused under multiple sections. The two were produced before a Siliguri court on Monday. The Kharibari Police Station has launched an investigation into the matter to determine how the alleged fake Indian documents were obtained and whether others were involved in the network.
