A massive police raid at the residence of a relative of a stone businessman in Birbhum district on Wednesday led to the recovery of a huge cache of cash and gold, triggering widespread speculation in the area. Authorities have so far declined to disclose the exact amount seized, saying the search operation is still underway.

The raid was conducted at the residence of Monir Mondal, a relative of stone trader Tulu Mondal, in the Mohammad Bazar area. Senior district police officials remained at the spot as teams searched the premises throughout the day.
Cash and gold recovery under probe
According to local sources, Monir Mondal had worked as a government bus driver before leaving the job to join Tulu Mondal’s business. He allegedly managed the latter’s stone and other business operations. Residents claimed that within a few years, he built a lavish house near the Deucha Bus Stand, and his lifestyle changed significantly.
Currency counting machines rushed to house
Police personnel reportedly recovered stacks of cash from cupboards inside the house. On Wednesday morning, five currency-counting machines, two printers, and two large trunks were brought into the premises to assist in the operation.
Unconfirmed local reports claimed that more than ₹20 crore in cash and over 10 kilograms of gold had been recovered. However, police have not officially confirmed these figures.
Police verify alleged illegal wealth sources
Tulu Mondal has previously faced allegations of involvement in illegal stone and sand mining in Birbhum. Police are now investigating whether the seized cash and valuables are linked to those alleged activities. The search operation and investigation are continuing.
