Delhi Police on Wednesday wrote to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, over a complaint alleging that “derogatory, malicious and defamatory content” targeting constitutional heads is being circulated on the platform.
The police has asked X to immediately remove the alleged posts/videos from the platform and provide complete details of the account holder who uploaded the content. The details sought include the user’s full name, address, contact information, email ID, and login and logout details with date and time stamps.
The police has also requested any other information that could help in the investigation. X has been asked to preserve details related to the alleged posts/videos for future investigation and provide a certificate under Section 63(4) of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).
Earlier, on July 27, Delhi Police directed several social media platforms to remove posts and videos containing offensive and abusive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The posts were allegedly uploaded during student protests at Jantar Mantar and the violence linked to the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, officials said.
According to Delhi Police, several posts containing abusive language against the Prime Minister appeared on different social media platforms during the protests and the violence that followed in the national capital.
Officials said the police’s social media monitoring team has been continuously tracking online platforms to identify such content. After finding objectionable posts, notices are being sent to the concerned social media companies, asking them to remove the content.
Police said several offensive comments and videos targeting the Prime Minister have already been removed after notices were issued.
The monitoring process is continuing, with cyber and social media teams keeping a close watch on online activities linked to the protests. The teams are identifying more objectionable content and taking action against posts that violate applicable rules.
The development comes amid increased political tensions over the July 20 ‘Chalo Sansad’ march, during which students protesting alleged irregularities in NEET and CBSE examinations clashed with security personnel while marching from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament. (ANI)
