Teachers in Karnataka can now use ‘Tr’ before their names. The state government issued an order on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. ‘Tr’ can be used in the same way as ‘Dr’ is used for doctors and ‘Prof’ for professors.
CM DK Shivakumar shared the information in Kudligi, Vijayanagara district. He said the decision honoured teachers’ contributions to society’s progress and the advancement of education.
According to officials, ‘Tr’ will only be used as an honorific and will not give teachers any additional academic status. The aim is to give the teaching profession a distinct professional identity.
Discussion held in the Cabinet
Shivakumar said there are around 4.5 lakh teachers in Karnataka. He added that society sees God in two types of people. The first are our parents, who give us life. The others are those who guide us through life.
He said the issue was discussed in the Cabinet meeting, following which it was decided to honour the contribution of teachers to society.
Shivakumar said it is the government’s responsibility to honour teachers. He described them as pillars of the nation, along with soldiers, farmers and workers.

Shivakumar wrote on X that behind every doctor who treats, every engineer who builds, every farmer who feeds us, every officer who serves, every entrepreneur who creates something new and every leader who guides, there is a teacher.
He wrote that a teacher is the person who first recognised someone’s potential and told them what they could achieve. He said that on Teachers’ Day, the Karnataka government had decided to add a distinct mark of honour before teachers’ names to recognise their invaluable contribution.
Considering reservation for students of rural government schools as well
Shivakumar said the government is also considering providing 7.5% reservation in jobs for students from rural government schools. No information has been provided yet on when a final decision on this reservation will be taken.
