A major decision has been taken for Agniveers and military personnel at the Executive Council meeting of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV). Agniveers who take admission in any university course after retirement will now have their tuition fees waived.
The move is being seen as an important step towards improving access to higher education for soldiers serving in all three wings of the armed forces.
Several other important proposals related to the university were also approved at the meeting.
These include setting up a new Department of Performing Arts, renovating a room/auditorium in memory of a former Vice-Chancellor, and forming a new committee to review financial assistance for students suffering from serious illnesses or disabilities.
Performing Arts department building to be constructed with aid of 1.5 crore
Vice-Chancellor Rakesh Singhai said a new Department of Performing Arts has been established at the university. The Lord of Jain Patalia Trust has donated around ₹1.5 crore for the construction of its building. Part of the building will be constructed using this donation.
Room/Auditorium to be named after S.M. Dasgupta
An initiative has also been taken in memory of the university’s former Vice-Chancellor, S.M. Dasgupta. Students from certain batches of the IET’s Electrical Engineering department had proposed renovating the room/auditorium there. Following their request, the Executive Council approved the proposal to name the room/auditorium after S.M. Dasgupta.
Serious Illness and Disability Assistance Scheme to be reviewed
The university’s existing system of providing financial assistance to students suffering from serious illnesses or disabilities will also be reviewed. A new committee will be formed for this purpose. The committee will examine the existing rules and consider increasing the amount of financial assistance where necessary. Efforts will also be made to include insurance-related assistance under the scheme, if possible.
AC members donated their honorarium to the Student Assistance Committee
Another notable initiative came from the meeting. The university’s AC members decided to donate the honorarium they received today to the Student Disability/Assistance Committee. Accordingly, the honorarium received today was donated to the Student Assistance Committee.
