A Krishnanagar district court has issued an arrest warrant against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in a case concerning alleged provocative and controversial remarks.

The case was filed by several women from Ghurni, who accused Moitra of making allegedly objectionable comments concerning incitement to violence, religious sentiments, the Union Home Minister, the Indian Army and a tulsi mala.

Case involves alleged remarks on religion

The court had directed Moitra to appear in person on Wednesday. However, she did not appear and informed the court through her lawyer that she was unable to attend. Following this, the court issued the arrest warrant.

Summons issued repeatedly before warrant

According to court sources, Moitra had previously been served multiple notices and summons but allegedly failed to appear. She was given another opportunity to appear on August 12 and subsequently on August 18. The court had said her plea through her lawyer would be considered only after she appeared personally.

As Moitra again failed to appear on Wednesday, the arrest warrant was issued.

Tapas Roy reacts to court order

Reacting to the development, state minister Tapas Roy said the court had taken the decision based on the circumstances and criticised Moitra over what he described as her alleged arrogance and controversial statements.
