For Nadia’s Debjit Bhadra, the road to securing a job with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was marked by long working hours, repeated failures and relentless determination.
Childhood space dream inspires relentless preparation
A resident of Gangnapur in Nadia, Debjit worked as a government ambulance driver at Shaktinagar District Hospital. Despite working nearly 12 hours a day, he continued preparing for competitive examinations during his spare time, refusing to give up on his dream of working in India’s space programme.
Chandrayaan success strengthens his ISRO ambition
Debjit had been fascinated by India’s space research programme since childhood. The success of the Chandrayaan missions further strengthened his ambition to work with ISRO. However, balancing a demanding job with exam preparation proved challenging. After completing his daily ambulance duty, he would find time to study and prepare for various competitive examinations.
Repeated failures could not break determination
His journey was far from smooth. Debjit appeared for examinations several times but failed to achieve the desired result. He faced failure around five to six times, yet remained determined to continue his preparation instead of abandoning his goal.
Online learning helped strengthen exam preparation
He relied on educational videos on YouTube and guidance from coaching centres to strengthen his preparation. Even after repeated setbacks, he continued working towards his target, eventually turning years of effort and perseverance into success.

Debjit is teary-eyed,
It was always my dream. After the launch of Chandrayaan, I started thinking about working in an organisation where India was earning tremendous recognition and the entire world was watching the country’s achievements. From then on, I gradually started studying and learning more about ISRO and its work. Before this, I was an ambulance driver at Shaktinagar District Hospital, where I drove a government ambulance.I had 12-hour shifts, and after returning home, I would study. I also attended coaching classes and used whatever free time I had during my duty to prepare.I continued this routine despite the challenges and repeated attempts. Eventually, my hard work paid off, and I was selected. I have now received my appointment letter.
Ambulance driver earns coveted ISRO opportunity
Debjit has now secured an opportunity to join the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota as a Technician-B under ISRO. His journey from driving a government ambulance for long hours to securing a position at one of India’s premier space research institutions has become an example of how persistence can help overcome repeated setbacks.
Persistence turns long-held dream into reality
For Debjit, the achievement is not merely a new job but the culmination of a long-held dream. His story highlights the importance of continuing to work towards a goal even when success does not come after the first few attempts.
