Singer Sonu Nigam has explained why he chose not to comment on the NEET paper leak controversy and protests over alleged irregularities in examinations in Delhi.
In an interview with Bombay Times, Sonu said he was asked about the issue at an event held to pay tribute to his guru, Pankaj Udhas. He felt that discussing politics or another issue at an event dedicated to his guru would have been insensitive.
Sonu also said that he had promised his father that he would never comment on an issue unless he had complete information about it. Recently, a video of the singer went viral on social media in which he was seen declining to answer media questions about the NEET examination.
Went to pay tribute, felt discussing politics would be disrespectful
Sonu Nigam said that over his more than three decades in Mumbai, he has learned an important rule about press conferences: when the media is invited for a particular event, the discussion should remain focused on that event.
He said he had attended the gathering to pay tribute to his guru, Pankaj Udhas, and felt that bringing politics into such an occasion would have been disrespectful. He also appealed to the media to maintain the dignity of such events.
Promised his father not to comment without complete information
Sonu said he does not use social media on his phone and that his life mainly revolves around music and spirituality.
He added that he had promised his father that he would not speak publicly about an issue unless he had complete information about it. He recalled taking a stand on major issues in the past, including the loudspeaker controversy over Azaan and royalty rights for singers, and said his efforts had contributed to changes in the system.
Says others should come forward for change
Talking about his earlier activism, Sonu said that it is now time for others to step forward and raise their voices on new issues. He urged people to think about what positive changes they can bring to society through their commitment.
Sonu also took a dig at social media activism, saying people should become “real warriors” instead of limiting themselves to posts and comments online.
Sang during neck surgery
Sonu Nigam recently shared a video on social media showing him singing for the medical staff while undergoing surgery at a hospital.
Sharing the video, Sonu Nigam wrote- Gave a sudden small performance for the dear Dr. Nilesh Satbhai and his entire team during my surgery. Sang even in pain because the joy of music is unique!
Sonu Nigam had revealed – his nerves were pinched
The reason for Sonu Nigam’s surgery is not yet known. However, in June, he had shared information about his health on social media. Sonu had revealed that he was suffering from a painful nerve-related illness and was undergoing treatment for it. In June, Sonu had mentioned that his nerves were pinched and he had undergone MRI and CT scans.
Sonu had said that he had undergone several MRI and CT scans. He had been taking medicines for several days. He also showed a patch near his neck.
