The students’ protest demanding cancellation of the JPSC-JSSC examination and a CBI probe entered its 23rd day on Sunday (16 Aug), with protesters announcing plans to burn effigies of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
Student leader Ravindra Paswan said, “The effigies of both leaders would be burnt as a mark of protest over the alleged lack of action on our demands.”
Students say August 15 assurance was not fulfilled
According to Paswan, “When the students’ agitation began, Rahul Gandhi had spoken to them and assured them that Congress would withdraw its support from the Jharkhand government if CM Hemant Soren failed to take a positive step or give a satisfactory response to their demands by August 15.”
He added, “August 15 has passed, but the government has not taken any concrete initiative on their demands.”
Protesters accuse leaders of misleading them
The students now allege that they have been repeatedly given assurances without any substantive action.
Paswan said, “The decision to burn the effigies of Hemant Soren and Rahul Gandhi was aimed at highlighting our anger and registering our protest against continued inaction on the examination issue.”
Students on hunger strike at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium also joined the flag march.

Five students continue to remain on hunger strike as the agitation over the JPSC-JSSC examination demands entered its 23rd day. Three of them have been admitted to Ranchi Sadar Hospital, where they are continuing their fast.
Student leader stopped from joining flag march
Devendranath Mahto, who has been on hunger strike for 14 days, wanted to join the flag march and hoist the national flag on Independence Day. However, police stopped him at the hospital.
The move led to a brief scuffle between student leaders and police personnel. The administration said, “Mahto was prevented from leaving the hospital because of his health condition.”

Reacting to the incident, Mahto said, “I was stopped from hoisting the flag on Independence Day. Is this what freedom is?”
Security tightened at Sadar Hospital
Security has been increased at Ranchi Sadar Hospital, with a large number of police personnel deployed from the main entrance to the ICU area.
The students continuing the hunger strike are also undergoing regular medical examinations as their health is being monitored.

Neeraj Kumar, who travelled from Dumka to join the Tiranga Yatra, accused the Jharkhand government of ignoring the students’ demands for justice.
He said, “We want justice for students, but the government is not accepting our demands because everyone is involved in the scam. I feel that this government is being run by bureaucrats.”

On Friday (14 Aug) evening, protesting students took out a march from Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium to Albert Ekka Chowk, raising slogans against the state government during the procession.
