Delhi’s hostel tragedy has taken another turn. The Delhi High Court has held the MCD and Delhi University responsible after a five-storey building in Satya Niketan collapsed, killing seven people.
The court has also questioned the poor condition of hostels for students from outside Delhi and asked the MCD, Delhi government, Centre, NHRC and DU to respond within 10 days.
Meanwhile, flood-hit Tibet has finally opened its doors to international media. For the first time, journalists from Reuters and other foreign outlets were taken to the Gyirong border crossing after the devastating August 26 floods. Delhi hostel tragedy: 7 dead; responsibility gets buried under rubble?
The Delhi High Court heard the hostel case today and held that both the MCD and Delhi University were responsible for the incident.
The court expressed serious concern over the extremely poor condition of hostels used by students from outside Delhi, saying the government cannot simply avoid responsibility.
It has asked the MCD, Delhi government, Centre, NHRC and Delhi University to submit their responses within 10 days. Meanwhile, police detained hostel owner Hariram Bansal in Bhiwadi.
Seven people have died, 12 were rescued, and five remain critical. The rescue operation has now ended. READ MORE
Foreign media gets rare access to flood-hit Tibet; disaster leaves 1,355 dead
For the first time, international media have been allowed into the area hit by severe flooding after a glacier collapse along the Nepal-Tibet border.
On Sunday, China’s Foreign Ministry took Reuters and several other foreign media outlets to the Gyirong border crossing.
The region was struck by a massive rush of water, mud and debris on August 26. More than 1,355 people have died in China and Nepal, while over 5,000 remain missing.

Maruti Suzuki is making its cars a little more expensive yet again. The country’s biggest carmaker has raised prices of select models by up to ₹20,000 from September, blaming rising input costs and inflation.
This is the company’s third price hike since May, after a hike of up to ₹30,000 in August and another increase in June.

LPG refill got easier; rural users can book every 25 days
Good news for LPG users: whether you live in a city or a village, you can now book your next cylinder after 25 days.
The Centre has made the refill gap uniform for all domestic customers, ending the earlier 45-day wait in rural areas.
Minister Suresh Gopi said the move follows an improvement in LPG supplies and a sharp fall in the backlog.

Apple fans waiting for the regular iPhone 18 may have to wait a little longer. At its September 9 event, Apple is expected to unveil only the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and its first foldable iPhone.
The big headache? Memory chip prices have jumped nearly 400% for 256GB chips in a year.

The Day Ahead
1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Vadodara and Navsari today to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for various development projects in Gujarat. The visit also aims to highlight the ‘Swachhata Se Swagat’ campaign, with cleanliness and tree plantation drives being held across both districts.
2. Vice President C P Radhakrishnan will visit Imphal and the INA Museum and War Memorial at Moirang in Manipur’s Bishnupur district. He will also visit Sainik School in Imphal. The visit aims to pay tribute to the INA’s history and honour the contribution of its personnel.
3. Jharkhand BJP will begin a four-day statewide agitation over cases registered against students. Demonstrations will be held at district headquarters across all 24 districts from September 8 to 11, aiming to pressure the state government to withdraw the cases.
4. Punjab government employees are expected to go on mass leave today if the state government does not withdraw its notice against protesting staff. The move aims to pressure the government to address their long-pending demand for Dearness Allowance (DA) and intensify their ongoing agitation.
5. Madras High Court will continue its interim stay on notifying bypolls in five Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies. The hearing aims to decide whether the stay should continue, as election petitions challenging the results in Trichy East, Viralimalai, Perundurai, Ambasamudram and Karur remain pending.
