Following the building accident in Satya Niketan, New Delhi, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has ordered an inspection of buildings across Delhi.
The MCD has asked executive engineers (Building) from all zones to inspect buildings in their respective areas and submit a report by September 10.
Seven people were killed and at least six others were injured when a building collapsed in Satya Niketan on Sunday. This order was issued following the incident.
The information collected during the inspection will be included in an affidavit to be filed in the Delhi High Court within 10 days. The hearing will take place on September 25.
Meanwhile, according to the MCD, a survey conducted earlier this year covered 2,784,286 buildings, of which only 19 were found to be dangerous.

On the Satya Niketan building collapse, Uttar Pradesh Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar says, “When the owner knew that the building’s lifespan had expired, he should have had it demolished and constructed a new one; since he did not do so, action will now be taken against him…”
According to news agency PTI, the mortal remains of PG collapse were brought to the native place in Madhya Pradesh’s Katni.
In a statement, the family’s neighbour Vijay Kumar Rajak says, “… We got the information on Sunday at around 7:30 pm. His father called us and said that the building where he used to live had collapsed… He was identified through an old injury. He had suffered an injury to his knee earlier and had undergone an operation, for which he had a long scar with stitches…”
According to news agency ANI, citing MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, the building near the PG that collapsed in Satya Niketan has weakened, and we will take it up for demolition in a calibrated manner in the next 1-2 days.”
The accused were brought to RK Puram Police Station after the arrest.
Key accused Hariram Gupta and Urmila Gupta’s son, Mahesh Gupta, was brought there during his two-day police custody.
According to Delhi Police, the building’s electricity connection was in Hariram Gupta’s name, while his son was handling its management. The property was registered in the name of Hariram’s wife, Urmila Gupta.

Additional DCP Abhimanyu Poswal says, “Three people, including Hariram Gupta, have been arrested. We constituted 10 teams and arrested Hariram Gupta from Bhiwadi. As per the initial information we got, Hariram Gupta was the owner of the building and managed the PG. Later, we found that his wife, Urmila, is the building owner, and she has been arrested. Their son, Mahesh, who operated the PG, has also been arrested.”
He further said, “During the enquiry, Hariram Gupta stated that he was getting a few renovations done in the basement of the building. The injured labourer also confirmed construction activities were being carried out in the basement of the building.”
Hariram Gupta is a retired sergeant of the Indian Air Force.
According to the police, property owner Urmila Gupta, her husband Hariram Gupta, and their son Mahesh Gupta have been arrested in connection with the collapse of a five-storey building in Satya Niketan.
The police said that the property is registered in Urmila Gupta’s name, but its management and operations were handled by her husband and son.
All three were produced before the Patiala House Court on Monday night. Justice Bhavya Kharal sent Hariram and Urmila to 14 days of judicial custody, while Mahesh was sent to two days of police custody.
The police have also begun searching for the PG operators and the labor contractor to arrest them. Their roles will be investigated.
Seven people were killed in the accident. They include Abhishek Kumar, Arpit Jaj, Yuvraj Soni, Pawan Kumar, Surendra Singh, Akshat Singh, and Param Lal Kori.
The 28-hour-long rescue operation at Satya Niketan was completed on Monday evening. Twelve people were pulled from the rubble. The condition of the three injured people is critical.
Following the accident, the MCD suspended South Zone Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar on Monday. Four engineering officials were also suspended along with him until the departmental proceedings are completed.
After this, IAS officer Shashwat Saurabh has been given additional charge of MCD’s South Zone. Saurabh, a 2016-batch IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre, is currently the Deputy Commissioner of the South West Zone.
Satya Niketan was established between 1965 and 1970 to rehabilitate slum dwellers. After South Campus began operating in the 1970s, colleges expanded, and students began living here.
Many original allottees have sold their houses. There are around 300 houses in this area, of which approximately 170 operate as PGs.
According to urban planning expert Jagdish Mamgain, many of Delhi’s old buildings were not constructed to bear the load of additional floors. Of Delhi’s approximately 7.5 million houses, only 175,000 buildings have approved building layout plans.
