A shocking incident occurred at around 2:45 am. at Asian Hospital, located at Akashvani Chowk in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city, when a massive fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) due to an air-conditioner short circuit. Fortunately, a major tragedy was averted thanks to the prompt response of the fire brigade, police, and medical staff, and all nine babies in the unit were safely shifted to other hospitals.
At the time the fire broke out, 9 infants were undergoing treatment in the NICU department. As soon as the emergency services received information about the fire, they rushed to the spot and immediately evacuated all the children. Of these, 5 infants have been shifted to Ghati Hospital, 3 to MGM Hospital, and one infant to Sanjeevani Hospital for treatment.
Fire brought under control within 10 to 15 minutes
As soon as information about the fire was received, 5 fire engines rushed to the scene. All the officers and personnel of the fire brigade made strenuous efforts and brought the fire under control within just 10 to 15 minutes, preventing it from spreading to other floors.
Fleet of 30 ambulances and prompt response from the police
For the safety of the patients and rescue operations, Jawahnagar Police and RCP personnel arrived at the scene immediately with a heavy police deployment. Notably, as many as 30 ambulances had reached the scene to shift the patients to other hospitals in time.
There were 58 patients on the first floor
The hospital’s NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) was located on the first floor, where 9 patients were undergoing treatment. Additionally, the general ward on the same floor had a total of 36 patients, while 13 patients were in the special rooms, bringing the total to 58 patients. Due to the swift response of the authorities, everyone was successfully moved to a safe location in time.
