The South Kolkata District Congress Committee has filed a complaint with the Bhawanipore Police Station against Dhirendra Shastri, popularly known as Bageshwar Baba, alleging that his remarks hurt the sentiments of Bengali people and insulted Durga Puja.
Complaint submitted on September 8 The complaint was submitted on September 8 by South Kolkata District Congress Committee president Pradip Prasad and West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Ashutosh Chatterjee. The document bears the receiving stamp of Bhawanipore Police Station.
Congress objects to alleged remarks during Durga Puja In the complaint, the Congress alleged that Shastri made “unruly” and objectionable comments at an event in Liluah, in the presence of dignitaries, officials and elected representatives. The Congress claimed that the remarks were deeply hurtful to Bengali people and alleged that Shastri attempted to create a distinction among people based on language and identity.
Objection to comments on food during Puja The complaint particularly objects to Shastri’s alleged remarks about what people should and should not eat during Durga Puja. The Congress said such comments were against the sentiments associated with the festival in West Bengal.
Demand for FIR and immediate action The complainants have urged the police to initiate immediate administrative action and register an FIR, alleging that the remarks could create social disharmony and division. The complaint refers to portions of Shastri’s speech that were circulated in the media between September 4 and September 6. The Congress has sought necessary legal action over the alleged remarks.
