India Post has launched ‘DIGIPIN’ for the digital identification of locations across the country. It will enable the precise identification of any location. DIGIPIN will consist of a unique code containing 10 letters and numbers.
Compared with the existing six-digit PIN code, it will allow locations to be identified more accurately. Notably, DIGIPIN will not replace the existing PIN code; it can be used alongside traditional addresses and PIN codes.
It has been developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre. It can be used for government services, delivery of goods, and other location-based services.
How DIGIPIN differs from a PIN Code
The existing PIN code identifies a large area. A single PIN code can cover several roads, colonies, and neighborhoods. DIGIPIN, on the other hand, identifies an area of approximately 4 meters x 4 meters. Every part of the country is divided into areas this small, with a separate code assigned to each location.
This code is determined based on the exact location of a place on Earth. It can help in areas where house addresses are unclear or road and house number information is not easily available.
It can also be useful in villages and remote areas. Another special feature of DIGIPIN is that once the location information is obtained, it can be used without an internet connection.
Will help with deliveries and emergencies
DIGIPIN can help delivery companies find the correct location, especially in areas where locating a traditional address is difficult.
It can also be used for emergency services and disaster management. This will help identify the exact location of a person, building, or government property.
The government can also use it for services such as digital identity verification and government schemes.
How to find your DIGIPIN?
On 27 May, 2025, the Department of Posts launched the “Know Your DIGIPIN” facility. Through this, anyone can find the DIGIPIN of their location.
To use it, visit the Department of Posts website and access the “Know Your DIGIPIN” facility. It generates the DIGIPIN based on the location information of a mobile phone or computer. There is no need to create an account or log in.
