
The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard petitions seeking the declaration of marital rape as a criminal offence. The central government told the court that making marital rape a separate offence falls within the jurisdiction of Parliament and the executive, not the Supreme Court.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Justice Suryakant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana has directed that the final hearing in the matter begin after three weeks. The bench also includes them. The court has scheduled hearings in the matter on Wednesday and Thursday.
