Mamata Banerjee faced “chor, chor” slogans in central Kolkata on Tuesday, days after a similar protest reportedly targeted her convoy in Halisahar.
Former CM pays tribute to Netaji
Banerjee reached Shyambazar carrying a portrait of freedom fighter Khudiram Bose and paid tribute at the feet of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s statue. She also remembered Netaji, Mahatma Gandhi, and Matangini Hazra, saying that her party does not hold programmes merely for show but honours the freedom fighters from the heart.
‘Chor’ slogans erupt after garlanding ceremony
Soon after Banerjee garlanded the Netaji statue, slogans of “chor, chor” were reportedly raised from within the crowd. The Kalighat camp of the Trinamool Congress alleged that BJP workers surrounded the former chief minister and staged a protest.
Banerjee subsequently left the spot in her car, while the protest reportedly continued.
TMC alleges BJP workers staged protest
A man sitting on the road was seen clapping and raising slogans. When questioned, he reportedly said that they had remained silent while Banerjee was offering the garland, but later raised the slogans, adding that “a thief has to be called a thief.”
TMC alleges attempt to intimidate party
The incident comes days after Banerjee’s convoy was reportedly targeted with mud and footwear in Halisahar. “Chor” slogans were also raised during that incident.
The latest protest has intensified the political confrontation between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP in West Bengal, with the TMC camp alleging that such demonstrations are an attempt to intimidate the party.
