A migrant labourer was killed and another injured after suspected terrorists opened fire on non-local workers in Kelam area of Kulgam, Kashmir, on Friday.
Officials told Bhaskar that two non-local labourers were targeted in the attack, which is being treated as a targeted killing. One of the victims died at the scene, while the injured labourer was taken to hospital before being referred to Anantnag for further treatment.
Following the attack, security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to track down the attackers.
Terrorist attack in Anantnag, Kashmir, head constable killed
Officials say the attackers may be hiding in the surrounding area.
On July 21, terrorists attacked police in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. A 35-year-old head constable was killed. According to officials, at around 12:30 pm, terrorists suddenly opened fire on police personnel deployed for security duty during the Amarnath Yatra.
Security forces retaliated, leading to gunfire. Head Constable Aashiq Hussain Qureshi was injured in the exchange. He was immediately rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Two recent terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir
1. July 18: Infiltration attempt along the Rajouri LoC
The Indian Army opened fire on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on the night of July 17 after noticing suspicious movement. According to officials, the soldiers noticed suspicious movement of some people in the Tarkundi forward area around 10 pm, following which the firing took place.
Officials said intermittent gunfire continued for about an hour and a half. There were no casualties in the attack. The army believes the suspected militants were attempting to infiltrate. However, no arrests were made.
2. July 8: Shopian Lashkar commander Zakir Ahmed killed
Security forces killed top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Zakir Ahmad Ghani during an encounter in Shopian. He was on the list of 14 most wanted terrorists issued after the Pahalgam terror attack. The operation was carried out jointly by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the CRPF.
