A 27-year-old woman was allegedly attacked with a knife by a man in Jabalpur’s Bhedaghat area over resentment following the breakdown of a marriage proposal. The accused, identified as 30-year-old Shubham Jangde, was reportedly caught and beaten by local residents while trying to flee the spot. He later sustained injuries in a road accident. Police have registered cross FIRs in connection with the incident.

The incident took place on July 31 on the Shivayalaya Parisar Road in Bhatauli under the Bhedaghat police station limits.

Marriage proposal was called off over community differences

According to the information available, the woman’s family had been discussing her marriage with Shubham Jangde, a resident of Gorakhpur, some time ago. However, the proposal was eventually called off after a dispute arose over differences between the two communities.

Shubham was allegedly upset over the decision.

Stopped woman on her way to work, attacked with knife

At around 8:30 am on July 31, Shubham allegedly reached the Bhatauli Shivayalaya Road on a motorcycle and stopped the woman while she was on her way to work.

He reportedly asked her why her family had refused the marriage proposal. The woman explained the situation and told him that she needed to leave for work.

According to the complaint, Shubham allegedly abused her and attacked her with a knife with the intention of killing her. The woman sustained injuries in the attack.

Hearing her screams, people nearby gathered at the spot. Shubham allegedly tried to flee after seeing the crowd. The injured woman was taken to a hospital, following which police registered a case based on her complaint.

Accused claims he was attacked by locals

Shubham, a resident of Christian Mohalla in Gorakhpur, also filed a complaint with the police on Saturday, leading to a cross-case.

According to Shubham’s complaint, their marriage proposal could not proceed due to caste-related differences, which had led to frequent disputes between them. He claimed that on the day of the incident, the woman clearly refused to marry him, following which a physical altercation took place.

Shubham alleged that immediately after the incident, two to three unidentified people present at the spot surrounded him and began beating him.

He said he managed to escape by taking his motorcycle and riding away. While fleeing the crowd, he allegedly lost control of the motorcycle near Manegaon and fell on the road, sustaining injuries.

Police have registered a counter-case based on his complaint and are investigating both sides of the incident.
